Warning signs at home

Slow drains in several fixtures, gurgling pipes, sewage odors near the tank or field, soggy ground or standing water over the field, and grass that is unusually green over the lines are all common signs. Backups into the lowest drains are the most urgent.

What the county treats as failing

Butler County's repair program application describes a failing system as one that discharges sewage to bedrock, drain tiles, groundwater, or surface water, one that discharges onto the ground surface, or one with deteriorating parts such as the concrete tank or distribution box. It notes that a system can be failing without obvious signs.

What to do

Cut back on water use. Do not drive or park on the field. Then call. We check the tank first, since a full tank or a blocked outlet is the simplest fix, and then evaluate the field. If replacement is needed, it goes through the health district's site review and permit process.
