The general guideline

The US EPA says a household septic system should generally be inspected at least every three years by a septic service professional, and household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. Systems with electrical float switches, pumps, or mechanical parts, like aerobic units, should be checked more often, generally once a year.

What changes the schedule

Tank size, the number of people in the home, how much water you use, and garbage-disposal use all change how fast solids build up. A small tank in a full house fills faster than a large tank with two people.

Check your operation permit

In Ohio, your system's operation permit can set its own maintenance frequency (OAC 3701-29-09). If it does, follow the permit. Keep your pumping receipts in case the Butler County General Health District asks for proof of maintenance.
